Soviet Pe-2 Series 205 - This is a model of a dive bomber that flew against the Germans in 1943 or later. The Pe-2 was one of the three new bombers, the other two being the Il-2 and Su-2, that the Soviets secretly produced after their invasions of Poland and Finland in 1939. The first versions of the Pe-2 lacked a defensive machine-gun position behind the pilot, but this made it too easy for enemy fighters to attack from the rear, so a rear seat for a machine gunner was added on later models. Some Pe-2s were converted into long range fighters and called Pe-3s. Some were converted into long range reconnaissance planes and designated Pe-2Rs. The Pe-2 was one of the most successful dive bombers of WWII, with over 11,000 being built. |
