Japanese Ki-43-Ic Type 1 Army Fighter - This is a model of a plane that flew against the Allies in Malaya and Burma in December 1941. The Allied codename for the plane was "Oscar." The Japanese name for the Oscar was the Hayabusa, meaning peregrine falcon. The Oscar became operational in 1941 and replaced the Nakajima Ki-27 "Nate." Beginning in 1943, the Japanese supplied Oscars to their reluctant ally Thailand. The Oscar was the Japanese Army's primary fighter plane during WWII, despite the introduction of the Nakajima Ki-44 "Tojo" in 1942, the Kawasaki Ki-61 "Tony" in 1943, and the Nakajima Ki-84 "Frank" in 1944. |
