Japanese G3M2 Type 96 Model 22 Navy Land-Based Bomber - This is a model of a plane that helped to sink the British battleships HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales off the coast of Malaya in December, 1941. The Allied codename for this plane was "Nell." It was the predecessor to the Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" naval land-based bomber. The Nell was the world's first long range monoplane bomber. It first saw combat against the Chinese in 1937. Beginning in March 1941, Nakajima took over the building of Nells so that Mitsubishi could concentrate on producing Betties, and Nell production finally ended in 1943. The Japanese referred to their naval land-based attack bombers as Rikkos. |
