Italian MC.200 "Saetta" - This is a model of a fighter plane that participated in Operation Barbarossa in 1941. MC.200s made up the fighter plane contingent of the Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia (CSIR), the Italian military unit that Mussolini sent east to help the Germans fight the Soviets. The radial-engined MC.200 was the best fighter the Italians had available when they entered WWII in June 1940. It was succeeded in 1941 by the MC.202, which had a more powerful German-made Diamler-Benz DB 601A inline engine. These engines, however, were needed for the Luftwaffe, so the Italians only received 400 of them, and Alfa Romeo was licensed to produce more of them in Italy. The company, however, was unable to build them fast enough, so Macchi continued production of the radial-engined MC.200 until 1943, while building MC202s as fast as inline engine production would allow. |

Italian MC.202 "Folgore" - This is a model of a fighter plane that flew against the British in North Africa beginning in late 1941. The MC.202 was the first modern Italian fighter, even though the country had been at war for more than a year when it entered service. It had good performance but the early models were too lightly armed. The MC.202 was developed from the MC.200. It was fitted with a more powerful engine, a licensed version of the inline German Daimler-Benz DB 601A, built in Italy by Alfa Romeo. But Alfa Romeo couldn't build the engine fast enough so only about 1,500 MC.202s were produced. Most of these were built before the Italian government surrendered in September 1943. Afterwards, some Italian pilots stayed with their MC.202s in German-occupied northern Italy and flew their planes for the air force of Mussolini's fascist puppet state, the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR). Production of the plane continued under German occupation too, and about another 30 were produced. |

Italian MC.205 "Veltro"- This is a model of a fighter that flew for the air force of Mussolini's fascist puppet state, the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR), against Allied bombers over northern Italy in 1944. The MC.205 was developed from the MC.202. It had heavier armament and was fitted with a more powerful German Daimler-Benz DB 605A inline engine, built under license in Italy by Fiat. About 170 MC.205s were produced before the Italian government surrendered in September, 1943. Afterwards, most of the surviving MC.205s ended up in German-occupied northern Italy. About another 100 MC.205s were produced for the ANR in northern Italy before production was ended by Allied bombing in 1944. |
