British - This is a model of a plane that flew ground attack missions against German armored columns during the invasion of France in 1940. The Lysander entered service in 1938 as an army co-operation plane that was built to replace the Hawker Hector, and its predecessor the Hawker Audax. But Lysanders suffered heavy losses conducting ground attacks during the battle for France. Afterwards, they were used mostly for reconnaissance. The Lysander also became a good spy plane, because its short take-off and landing (STOL) ability allowed it to land undetected behind enemy lines. Lysanders were exported to several nations and saw combat flying for Finland, Australia, India, and the Free French. |
