Italian Ju 87R - This is a model of a dive bomber that flew from southern Italy against Greece in 1940-41. They were obtained from Germany because Italy could not produce a useful dive bomber of its own. Germany also supplied Ju 87s to its allies Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary. Stukas were excellent dive-bombers, the equivalent of flying artillery, but they were slow and suffered heavy losses to enemy fighters when they weren't provided with fighter cover. |

German Ju 87D - This is a model of a dive bomber that was used to attack Soviet armor on the Eastern front in 1943. The D variant, introduced in late 1941, was developed to improve the plane's performance. It had a better engine, a more aerodynamic design, and could carry a wider variety of ordinance. The G variant, introduced in 1943, added underwing cannons to the D variant. Still, by the end of 1943 most of the Luftwaffe's ground attack missions had been taken over by Fw 190 fighters outfitted as ground attack aircraft. |
