Yugoslavian IK-3 - This is a model of a fighter that opposed the Luftwaffe during the German invasion of April 1941. IK-3 pilots claimed 11 victories during this brief conflict. The IK-3's predecessor, the Ikarus IK-2, was the first modern Yugoslavian-built fighter. But the Yugoslavian air force's resistance to change and the nation's weak industrial base meant its strut-braced high-wing design was already obsolete by the time it entered service, and only 12 were built. Slow production also plagued the more modern low-wing monoplane IK-3, and only 12 were produced, with just six operable, at the time of the German invasion. After the German conquest, a few captured Rogozarski aircraft were turned over to the Croatian air force for use against Yugoslavian partisans. |
