Romanian IAR 80A - This is a model of a Romanian-built fighter that participated in the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The IAR 80 was designed using the rear fuselage of the PZL P-24. The were several variants, and the A model carried two extra machine guns in the wings, for a total of six. Planes equipped with an under-belly bomb sling for dive bombing were designated as IAR 81s. The IAR 80 was the Romanian air force's primary fighter until 1943, when Messerschmitt Bf 109Gs provided by Germany became more numerous, although IAR 80s remained in front line service until 1944. The Romanians produced almost 450 IAR 80s before production ended in 1944. |
