British - This is a model of a heavy bomber that flew from Britain against German targets in Europe in 1940. The Hampden was one of Britain's three heavy bombers at the outbreak of WWII, along with the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley and the Vickers Wellington. After suffering heavy losses to modern German Messerschmitt fighters during daylight raids in 1939, the RAF switched to night bombing by 1940, a strategy they followed with their heavy bombers over Germany until the end of the war. The Hampden was used extensively to drop mines in German waters, and also as a land-based torpedo bomber before it was totally replaced in that role by the Bristol Beaufighter in 1943. |
