American Piper L4-H - This is a model of a plane that flew observation missions for U.S. troops in France after D-Day in the summer of 1944. The L4 was a militarized version of the popular Piper Cub civilian aircraft. In 1941 the U.S. Army asked three manufacturers - Aeronca, Piper, and Taylorcraft - to provide some light aircraft for evaluation. Aeronca provided the L-3, Piper the L-4, and Taylorcraft the L-2. All three saw military service and received the nickname of Grasshoppers, with the Piper L-4 being the most widely used of the three. |
