German Fi 156 -This is a model of a reconnaissance plane that flew for Gen. Rommel's Afrika Korps in North Africa in 1941. The Fi 156 was the most famous short take-off and landing (STOL) plane of WWII, only needing a 200 foot runway to get off the ground and less than half that to land. It was used for short range reconnaissance, to insert personnel behind enemy lines, and for various transportation tasks, including air ambulance duty. An Fi 156 was used by the Germans to retrieve Mussolini from a hotel in the mountains after Italy surrendered in the fall of 1943. |
