German Do 217E-3 -This is a model of a bomber that attacked Allied shipping off the coast of France in 1942. The Do 217 wasn't a redesigned Do 17, but an entirely new plane altogether, with a larger fuselage and the ability to carry a heavy bomb load. The Do 217 was faster than its competition, the Ju 88A, and could carry a bigger payload than any German bomber until the Heinkel He 177 entered regular service in 1943. The first production version of the Do 217, the E variant, saw action as a bomber beginning in early 1941. The J variant was the first version fitted with guns in its nose for use as a long-range night fighter, and it entered service with the Luftwaffe in early 1942. A few of these planes were provided to Italy later that year. Do 217 night fighters, however, couldn't match the performance of Ju 88C and G night fighters. The Do 217K entered service in late 1942. It was the first version with a big, round nose and was outfitted to carry anti-shipping guided missiles such as the Henschel Hs 293 and the Fritz X. Production of the Do 217 was ended in late 1943 when the need for single-seat fighter planes became a priority. |
