German Do 17Z-2 -This is a model of a medium bomber that participated in the German invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece in 1941. The Do 17 was designed as a high-speed mail plane but that didn't work out. Instead it was put to work as a bomber by the Luftwaffe in Spain in 1937 with the Legion Condor, the German air contingent Hitler sent to fight for the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. There were several versions of the Do 17, with the E variant being the first version, and the Z-2 variant being the primary production version. In 1939 Dornier started building an export version, called the Do 215. It was fitted with more powerful inline engines, which greatly improved performance, so the planes were kept by the Luftwaffe. In 1940 a few Do 17s and 215s were fitted with hard noses bristling with guns and used as long-range night fighters against the British night bombing campaign, but their performance in this role was inferior to the Ju 88C. Production of the Do 17 ended in the spring of 1940 because Dornier was starting to build its successor, the new Dornier Do 217. The Germans continued using Do 17s, but their numbers constantly dwindled due to combat attrition. Some of the remaining Do 17s were provided to Germany's allies Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Finland. Germany sold an export version, the Do 17K, to Yugoslavia before the war, and the Yugoslavs built some more under a license. |
