American TBD-1 - This is a model of a Navy torpedo bomber from the U.S. carrier Hornet that flew against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The Devastator was the most modern torpedo bomber in the world when it entered service in 1937. It did not see combat, however, until the beginning of 1942. Of the 41 Devastators sent against the Japanese fleet at Midway, only 6 returned to their aircraft carriers. However, the low-level torpedo attack of the Devastators drew the attention of the defending Japanese Zero fighters and allowed Dauntless SBD divebombers to get to the Japanese carriers. After Midway, Devastators were replaced by Grumman TBF Avengers. |
