British Model 339E (Mk.I) - This is a model of a fighter that flew against the Japanese invasions of Malaya and Burma in December 1941. The Model 339 Buffalo was a de-navalized export version of the American F2A-2 carrier fighter. They were flown by British, Australian, and New Zealander units against the Japanese invasions of Malaya, Borneo, and Singapore. They were assisted by Dutch units flying Model 339D Buffalos, another export version of the F2A-2. After those places fell, Allied Buffalos flew against the subsequent Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies in early 1942. The Allied Buffalos flying against the Japanese in Southeast Asia faired better than the U.S. Marine Buffalos sent against the Japanese attack on Midway in June, 1942. That's because the Marine planes were F2A-3s, a later production model with self-sealing fuel tanks, additional armor, and a longer nose section. These changes added weight that significantly degraded the plane's performance. |

Finnish Model 239 - This is a model of a fighter that participated in the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The Model 239 Buffalo was a de-navalized export version of the American F2A-1 carrier fighter. They were obtained from the USA in 1940 during the Winter War with the Soviets but did not see action before that conflict ended in March. They did, however, see action during the Continuation War, the name the Finns gave to their renewed conflict with the Soviets which began soon after Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. Finnish Buffalos enjoyed great success, achieving a 26:1 kill ratio against the Soviet air force. |
