British - This is a model of a light bomber that flew against the German invasion of France and the Low Countries in May 1940. During this campaign, Battles suffered severe losses against more modern Luftwaffe Bf 109 fighters and German anti-aircraft fire. They were subsequently withdrawn from most combat roles and replaced by Bristol Blenheim Mk.IVs. The British sold some Battles to the Belgians before the war. The Belgian Battles also suffered heavy losses during the German invasion. Battles fared better when they faced the much weaker Italian air force. Greece obtained some Battles before the war and used them against the Italian invasion in 1940. The South Africans obtained Battles from the British after WWII began and used them against the Italians in East Africa. |
