American B-25B - This is a model of an Army long-range medium bomber that flew from the aircraft carrier Hornet in the Doolittle Raid to bomb Japan in April 1942. The B-25 was named after the late U.S. General Billy Mitchell, an early advocate of strategic bombing. B-25s typically flew from land bases, and they began flying coastal patrols immediately after Pearl Harbor, one of them sinking a Japanese submarine on December 24th, 1941. Starting with the G variant, most B-25s were given a solid nose bristling with guns, as planes outfitted in the field in this manner were enjoying success conducting low level attacks on
enemy ground positions and shipping. The U.S. Marines used their own version of the B-25, called the PBJ, in the Pacific starting in 1944. B-25s were also supplied to the air forces of several allied countries, including the Soviet Union, which received more than 800 planes through Lend-Lease. Nearly 10,000 B-25s, of all varieties, were produced.
