The Japanese called this major conflict the Nomonhan Incident. It began in May, 1939, from a dispute about the location of the border between Outer Mongolia, a Soviet puppet state, and Manchukuo, a Japanese puppet state. A ceasefire was finally agreed to in September, 1939, as Soviet General Zhukov had pushed the Japanese back and Stalin wanted to focus on securing the western borders of the Soviet Union.
