Although Iran was a neutral country, the British and Soviets felt they had to occupy it to secure a supply line from Britain to the Soviet Union.
Note: According to Richard Stewart's research, the air component of the Soviet invasion force was substantial, with at least 409 combat aircraft, including heavy bombers, and at least 72 fighters. However, the order of battle for the Soviet air force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily - VVS) for this campaign is still unavailable to the public, so this list is an educated guess. For example, significant numbers of the modern planes the Soviets had secretly developed since 1939, such as the LaGG-3, MiG-3, Yak-1, Pe-2, and Il-2, were available in 1941. But they were probably dedicated to fighting the rapidly advancing Germans.
