After Mussolini attacked Greece on October 28th, 1940, the British seized airfields on Crete and sent RAF units to mainland Greece. The Greeks were appreciative of the British help, but they were unwilling to allow British ground troops into their country because they didn't want to give Hitler a reason to intervene. Their caution was wasted, however, because in November Hitler decided to invade Greece through southern Bulgaria in the spring of 1941 because he didn't want the RAF to be in Greece, where they could bomb the Ploesti oil fields in Romania.
