Thailand was also attacked on December 8th when it hesitated to allow Japanese forces to pass through the southern part of the country to attack the British in Malaya and Burma. Thai armed forces put up stiff resistance at the Prachuab Khirikhan air base for several hours before their government reluctantly agreed to become a Japanese ally. The Royal Thai Air Force lost several planes before the fighting was stopped, including three Curtiss Hawk III fighter planes at Prachuab Khirikhan.
The Japanese also bombed and successfully invaded Guam and Hong Kong in December, 1941. There were apparently no American combat aircraft stationed on Guam to resist them. The British at Hong Kong had just two Supermarine Walrus seaplanes and three Vickers Vildebeest biplane torpedo bombers. Only two Vildebeests survived the initial Japanese bombing and then the British destroyed them to keep them from being captured. |

There were other American planes at Pearl Harbor but these were the only types to engage in air combat during the Japanese attack. The B-17s were flying in from California, on their way to reinforce the Philippines. They arrived during the attack and were intercepted by Zeros. The SBDs belonged to the aircraft carrier Enterprise, on its way back to Pearl Harbor from a mission to Wake Island. They were flying on ahead of the Enterprise and were also caught in the attack. |
